ELECTIVE STUDENTS
ROTATION OBJECTIVES
Clinical Care (Outpatient GIM)
• Conduct focused, efficient outpatient internal medicine assessments across a broad range of conditions
• Develop appropriate differential diagnoses and management plans within an ambulatory care setting
• Communicate clear, concise, and actionable consult recommendations to referring providers
Urgent and Subacute Care
• Assess and manage patients requiring timely internal medicine evaluation who do not require admission
• Recognize clinical thresholds for escalation to emergency or inpatient care
• Provide safe post-discharge assessments with appropriate risk mitigation and follow-up planning
Systems-Based Practice
• Utilize outpatient resources effectively, including diagnostics, referrals, and allied health services
• Understand referral pathways, access limitations, and system-level constraints
• Practice within the capabilities and limitations of outpatient care
• Demonstrate awareness of community-based resources available to internal medicine (Mobile Integrative Health Unit, Virtual Hospital, Outpatient IV Clinic, etc)
Outpatient vs Inpatient Care
• Describe the benefits (efficiency, accessibility) and limitations (reduced monitoring, delayed diagnostics) of outpatient care
• Apply appropriate patient selection and safety-netting strategies
Use of Artificial Intelligence
• Appropriately use AI tools to support clinical documentation and workflow
• Recognize limitations, risks, and privacy considerations, maintaining clinical accountability
Communication & Collaboration
• Produce timely, clear, and well-structured documentation tailored to referring providers and consultants
• Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary team members in the outpatient setting
Professionalism
• Demonstrate accountability, efficiency, and ethical practice in an outpatient environment
• Develop readiness for independent outpatient internal medicine practice
• Perform structured chart review and pre-encounter preparation
• Conduct patient assessments with the support of AI tools to enhance documentation efficiency and accuracy
• Review clinical findings and management plans with the supervising attending physician
• Integrate finalized documentation into the Electronic Medical Record system
• Administrative staff assist with formatting, coordination, and distribution of consult documentation, including transmission to referring providers
